Beyond the Anecdote is an independent research and analysis project examining political claims, public policy and contested social issues.

Social media has transformed political debate. Outrage attracts attention, conflict drives engagement and certainty is often rewarded more than accuracy. Complex issues are reduced to slogans, isolated examples and content designed to provoke an immediate emotional response.

The result is a more polarised public conversation in which people can become invested not only in a political position, but in defending their identity, their community and how they are perceived by others.

Too often, the goal of political discussion is no longer to determine what is true. It is to prove that our side is right and the other side is wrong.

Evidence that supports an existing belief is shared immediately. Evidence that challenges it is dismissed, ignored or subjected to standards that would never be applied to a preferred claim.

Beyond the Anecdote was created to push back against this pattern.

Personal stories and individual examples can reveal genuine problems, but they do not always show how common something is, what caused it or which policy will improve it. The project therefore looks beyond the immediate claim to the broader evidence, context and measurable outcomes.

Beyond the Anecdote explores politically and socially contested subjects, including:

• migration, citizenship and border policy;
• crime, justice and community safety;
• equality, discrimination and individual rights;
• international conflict, territory and sovereignty;
• social cohesion and shared civic values;
• government programs and public policy outcomes;
• political polarisation and ideological consistency; and
• the relationship between evidence, moral principles and policy preferences.

Some findings may support arguments commonly associated with the political left. Others may support arguments associated with the political right.

The objective is to assess each claim according to the strength of the evidence available.

Political disagreement is unavoidable. Intellectual dishonesty is not.

Beyond the Anecdote is for people willing to examine claims they agree with as critically as claims they oppose—and who believe that reality should matter more than ideology, social approval or political allegiance.
