Terms of Use

Effective date: 29 July 2026

These Terms of Use govern your access to and use of the Beyond the Anecdote website at beyondtheanecdote.com (the Site).

By accessing or using the Site, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site.

1. About Beyond the Anecdote

Beyond the Anecdote publishes research, surveys, commentary and structured analysis concerning political, social and public-policy issues.

The Site aims to examine the relationship between moral principles, claims, evidence, factual findings, policy choices and measurable outcomes. Some content may address controversial subjects or challenge commonly held views.

References to Beyond the Anecdote, we, us or our in these Terms mean the operator of the Site.

2. Informational purpose

Content on the Site is provided for general informational, educational and discussion purposes.

It does not constitute legal, financial, medical, psychological or other professional advice. You should obtain appropriate professional advice before making decisions that depend upon your individual circumstances.

Articles may contain analysis, interpretation or opinion. Although we aim to use credible evidence and represent sources accurately, reasonable people may interpret evidence differently.

3. Accuracy and currency

We take reasonable care when preparing content, but we do not guarantee that all information is complete, accurate, current or free from error.

Research findings, statistics, legislation, government policy and public events may change after publication. Unless otherwise stated, content reflects the information reasonably available at the time it was prepared.

Where an error is identified, we may correct, clarify or update the relevant material without notice.

4. Surveys and research

The Site may invite visitors to participate in surveys, questionnaires or other research activities.

Unless expressly stated otherwise:

  • participation is voluntary;
  • survey results should not be treated as representative of any broader population;
  • results may be affected by sample size, participant selection, response bias and other methodological limitations;
  • demographic categories may be combined or suppressed where necessary to reduce the risk of identifying participants; and
  • conclusions drawn from survey results are interpretations and may be revised as additional evidence becomes available.

By submitting a survey response, you grant us permission to store, analyse, combine, reproduce and publish that response for research, reporting and related editorial purposes.

We will ordinarily publish survey information in aggregated or de-identified form. We will not intentionally identify you in published findings unless you have clearly agreed to that use.

Further information about how we collect and handle information is available in our Privacy Policy.

5. Third-party research and sources

The Site may quote, summarise, analyse or link to research and material produced by third parties, including research organisations, academic institutions, governments, media organisations and other publishers.

Third-party material remains the property of its respective owner. Our use or discussion of a source does not imply that the source’s author or publisher endorses Beyond the Anecdote or our interpretation of its work.

You should consult the original source before relying on a quotation, statistic, summary or interpretation.

6. External websites and embedded content

The Site may contain links to or embedded content from third-party services, including survey platforms, data dashboards, social-media platforms and research databases.

We do not control these services and are not responsible for their availability, security, accuracy, privacy practices or content. Your use of a third-party service is governed by that provider’s own terms and policies.

A link to another website does not necessarily constitute endorsement of that website or its views.

7. Intellectual property

Unless otherwise stated, the original text, graphics, branding, survey design, analysis and other material created for Beyond the Anecdote are owned by or licensed to us and are protected by applicable intellectual-property laws.

You may:

  • access and read Site content for personal and non-commercial purposes;
  • share links to publicly available pages; and
  • quote reasonable extracts for commentary, criticism, research or discussion, provided you clearly attribute Beyond the Anecdote and include a link to the original page where practicable.

You must not, without prior written permission:

  • reproduce or republish a substantial part of the Site;
  • present our material as your own;
  • remove attribution, copyright notices or source information;
  • use our branding in a way that suggests endorsement or affiliation;
  • sell, license or commercially exploit our original material; or
  • systematically scrape, harvest or copy Site content or survey data.

Nothing in these Terms limits any use permitted by law, including applicable fair-dealing exceptions.

8. Acceptable use

You must not use the Site:

  • unlawfully, fraudulently or maliciously;
  • to interfere with the Site’s security, availability or operation;
  • to introduce malware or harmful code;
  • to attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Site, its administration systems or stored information;
  • to impersonate another person or submit deliberately false identifying information;
  • to manipulate survey results through automated, duplicate or coordinated submissions;
  • to threaten, harass or unlawfully target another person; or
  • to collect information about other users without permission.

We may restrict or block access, disregard survey responses or take other reasonable action where we believe these Terms have been breached.

9. Communications and submissions

If you send us feedback, suggestions, corrections or other material, you confirm that you have the right to provide it.

You retain ownership of your original material, but grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use, reproduce, edit and publish it for the purpose for which it was submitted.

We will not publish your name, email address or private correspondence without permission, except where required or authorised by law.

10. Site availability and changes

We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of the Site at any time.

We do not guarantee that the Site will always be available, uninterrupted, secure or free from technical problems. We are not responsible for losses caused by outages, maintenance, third-party hosting failures or circumstances beyond our reasonable control.

11. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Beyond the Anecdote excludes all warranties, representations and guarantees that are not expressly stated in these Terms.

We are not liable for loss or damage arising from:

  • reliance on Site content;
  • decisions made using articles, survey findings or other information published on the Site;
  • inaccuracies, omissions or outdated information;
  • third-party websites, services or embedded content;

12. Privacy

Our collection, use and handling of personal information are described in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms.

By using the Site or participating in a survey, you acknowledge that information will be handled in accordance with that policy and any additional notice presented when the information is collected.

13. Changes to these Terms

We may amend these Terms to reflect changes to the Site, our practices or applicable law.

The revised Terms will take effect when published on the Site. The effective date at the top of this page will be updated when material changes are made.

Your continued use of the Site after revised Terms are published constitutes acceptance of those revised Terms.

14. Severability

If any part of these Terms is found to be invalid, unlawful or unenforceable, that part will be read down or removed to the minimum extent necessary. The remaining provisions will continue to apply.
