Privacy Policy

Effective date: 28 July 2026

Beyond the Anecdote respects your privacy and is committed to handling personal information responsibly and transparently.

This policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, how it may be used and how you can contact us about your information.

1. Information we collect

We aim to collect only the information reasonably necessary to conduct surveys, analyse responses and communicate with participants.

Depending on how you interact with the website, we may collect:

  • your email address;
  • demographic information provided through surveys, such as age range, gender, general location, education, employment, cultural background or other broad demographic categories;
  • your answers to survey and research questions;
  • communications you send to us; and
  • limited technical information collected automatically when you access the website, such as your IP address, browser type, device type, referring page and basic server logs.

We do not intentionally request your:

  • name;
  • exact date of birth;
  • residential address;
  • telephone number; or
  • government identification details.

Please do not include identifying information in free-text survey responses.

2. Sensitive information

Some survey responses may reveal information regarded as sensitive under Australian privacy law, including political opinions, racial or ethnic origin, religious or philosophical beliefs, or sexual orientation.

Providing this information is voluntary. Where sensitive information is requested, it is collected with your consent for the research and analysis purposes explained in the relevant survey.

You may choose not to answer an optional demographic or survey question.

3. How we collect information

We may collect information when you:

  • complete a survey or questionnaire;
  • subscribe to receive updates;
  • contact us by email or through the website; or
  • visit or interact with the website.

Surveys may be delivered through third-party services such as Google Forms. Information submitted through those services may also be handled in accordance with the service provider’s privacy policy.

4. Why we collect and use information

We may use collected information to:

  • administer surveys and research projects;
  • help prevent duplicate or fraudulent survey submissions;
  • analyse how opinions and responses vary across demographic groups;
  • produce statistics, charts, articles and research findings;
  • improve our surveys, research methods and website;
  • respond to enquiries;
  • send updates where you have agreed to receive them;
  • maintain the security and proper operation of the website; and
  • comply with applicable legal obligations.

We will not use your information for an unrelated purpose without your consent unless required or authorised by law.

5. Publication of research results

Survey findings may be published on Beyond the Anecdote, social media, dashboards, reports or other public platforms.

Results will be presented in aggregated or de-identified form. We will not intentionally publish your email address or identify you as an individual.

Where a demographic group contains too few participants to report safely, we may combine categories, suppress the result or not publish that breakdown.

Although we take reasonable steps to avoid identification, participants should not provide identifying details in free-text answers.

6. Email addresses

Email addresses may be collected to:

  • verify or manage survey participation;
  • reduce duplicate responses;
  • respond to enquiries; or
  • provide updates where you have subscribed.

We will not sell, rent or trade your email address.

We will not add you to a mailing list solely because you completed a survey unless you separately agreed to receive communications. You may unsubscribe from optional emails at any time.

Where an email address is collected with survey responses, it may technically be associated with those responses within the survey platform, even though published results will be de-identified.

7. Disclosure to service providers

We may provide information to trusted service providers where reasonably necessary to operate the website and conduct research. These may include:

  • website hosting and security providers;
  • email providers;
  • survey and form platforms;
  • data storage and analysis services; and
  • website plugins, analytics or embedded-content providers.

Beyond the Anecdote currently uses or may use services provided by organisations such as Google, DreamHost and Cloudflare.

These providers may process or store information outside Australia, including in the United States and other countries in which they or their subcontractors operate. Privacy protections in those countries may differ from Australian requirements.

We may also disclose information where required by law or where reasonably necessary to protect the security, rights or safety of Beyond the Anecdote, its users or others.

8. Cookies, logs and embedded content

The website may use essential cookies and similar technologies required for security, functionality and performance.

The website may also include embedded forms, dashboards, videos or other content supplied by third parties. Interacting with embedded content may allow the relevant provider to collect technical information or place cookies on your device.

You can restrict cookies through your browser settings, although doing so may affect some website functions.

9. Data security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect information against loss, misuse, interference and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure.

However, no internet transmission or electronic storage system is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.

If we become aware of a data breach, we will assess and respond to it in accordance with applicable legal requirements.

10. Retention and deletion

We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, for legitimate research and record-keeping requirements, or as required by law.

Information that is no longer required will be deleted, destroyed or de-identified where reasonably practicable.

De-identified and aggregated research results may be retained indefinitely because they are used to preserve the integrity of published analysis and are not intended to identify individuals.

11. Access, correction and deletion requests

You may contact us to request access to, correction of or deletion of personal information we hold about you.

We may need to verify that the request relates to you. In some circumstances, we may be unable to locate or remove an individual survey response, particularly if it has already been de-identified or incorporated into aggregated results.

We will respond within a reasonable period and explain any lawful reason why a request cannot be completed.

12. Privacy concerns and complaints

If you have a question, concern or complaint about how your information has been handled, please contact:

Email: [email protected]

Please include enough information for us to understand and investigate your concern. We will acknowledge and respond to privacy complaints within a reasonable period.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy when our surveys, website practices, service providers or legal obligations change.

The current version will be published on this page with its effective date. Material changes affecting existing information will be communicated where reasonably practicable.
